Do you need to speak Italian to enjoy a vacation in Tuscany? No, our language skills are elementary at best consisting primarily of Buon giorno and Buona sera and we have traveled throughout Italy and Tuscany without any problem.
What carriers fly directly to Florence from the states? Unfortunately none at this time. We typically use Air France,  Sabena or Swiss Air to fly direct to Paris, Brussels or Zurich and then on to Florence.  Of late we have enjoyed flying to Geneva and then driving via the Mont Blanc tunnel to Tuscany.  It is an easy 1 day drive and the scenery is fantastic. Very recently, the last 3 years, we have flown g a directly to Zurich and driven to Milan. It is only a two hour drive and there are many GREAT restaurants in Switzerland.
Why do you enjoy vacationing in Tuscany? Everyday is an adventure, even if it only consists of picking up the Herald Tribune and spending the rest of the day lazing by the pool. There is a fascinating quality to life in Tuscany, it may be the passionate spirit of the people, the sense of history one experiences there, the radiant beauty of the surroundings, the gastronomical delight served daily in its restaurants, the knowledge that world class music, art and other cultural activities are just moments away.  All combine to force us to return as often as possible.
Do most all rental properties include a telephone? The best bet is to rent a world-wide enabled phone for $20/month + roaming charges. If you expect to send/receive e-mail during your vacation, take the time to check that your accommodation is equipped with a telephone and you have access to long distance calls. Remember to bring the appropriate three prong converter to the US standard telephone jack.
Do you have to rent a car to really see Tuscany? Although we prefer to rent a car, you do not need one.  Public transportation (Bus or Train) is quite good, and you can always rent a bicycle a vespa or use a taxi if you want to visit some out-of-way site.
